A Campus Carnival success through the rain
Lawrence, Kan.– In between two powerful thunderstorms, Student Union Activities managed to pull off its tenth annual Campus Carnival. One quick storm blew through around 3 pm and left just in time for SUA’s volunteers to finish setting up the event that started at 5. That night, after Carnival was cleaned up, over two inches of rain fell on Lawrence. Talk about perfect timing.
Over 3,000 KU students, faculty, staff and Lawrence community members showed up in the Lied Center parking lot to enjoy carnival games, rides, food, music and prizes. 20 percent of students who attended were international students. Events like Campus Carnival are meaningful to these students who may not have transportation to travel far off campus. The Lied Center parking lot has a great location, a quick walk from the Daisy Hill residence halls. The event did not only attract younger students, though 14 percent of attendees were graduate students.
KU Dining Services took the carnival food seriously by serving corn dogs, hot dogs, walking tacos and cheese-stuffed pretzels. The Phantastics, a genre-blending group from Kansas City, danced the night away on stage while providing an upbeat ambiance to the event.
