SUA’s Campus Carnival

A Campus Carnival success through the rain

Lawrence, Kan.– In between two powerful thunderstorms, Student Union Activities managed to pull off its tenth annual Campus Carnival. One quick storm blew through around 3 pm and left just in time for SUA’s volunteers to finish setting up the event that started at 5. That night, after Carnival was cleaned up, over two inches of rain fell on Lawrence. Talk about perfect timing.

Over 3,000 KU students, faculty, staff and Lawrence community members showed up in the Lied Center parking lot to enjoy carnival games, rides, food, music and prizes. 20 percent of students who attended were international students. Events like Campus Carnival are meaningful to these students who may not have transportation to travel far off campus. The Lied Center parking lot has a great location, a quick walk from the Daisy Hill residence halls. The event did not only attract younger students, though 14 percent of attendees were graduate students.

KU Dining Services took the carnival food seriously by serving corn dogs, hot dogs, walking tacos and cheese-stuffed pretzels. The Phantastics, a genre-blending group from Kansas City, danced the night away on stage while providing an upbeat ambiance to the event.

SUA to host International Women’s Day Gala

Lawrence, Kansas – Student Union Activities’ (SUA) Current Events committee will host an International Women’s Day Gala to celebrate Women’s History Month. The event will include five female speakers in order to “celebrate women from all walks of life”.

The keynote speaker for the event is Liz Plank, senior editor at Mic, host of Flip the Script and correspondent for MSNBC Shift’s Krystal Clear. Other speakers for the event include Annie McBride, Giselle Anatol, Jennifer Brockman and Micha Cox. All of the speakers were recommended by various campus departments and offices at the University of Kansas.

The event is open to the public and scheduled for Thursday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the Ballroom, Kansas Union, Level 5. Autumn Crafton, SUA Current Events coordinator, said she hopes the event will empower all women, especially those at KU.

“There are talented women and extraordinary resources at KU that don’t always get the spotlight and we intend to let them shine at this event. I expect the evening to inspire, empower, and provide not only camaraderie but also a call to action to learn, act, and grow,” said Crafton.
