Unionfest 2017

Student Union Activities hosts annual Unionfest kickoff event

Lawrence, Kan.– SUA has been hosting Unionfest for the KU campus for decades. It is an important tradition to kick off the new school year. Students living in residence halls are transported to the Union to spend the evening learning about campus opportunities, picking up freebies, and making memories with new friends.

With over 8,000 in attendance, this year’s Unionfest was packed with activity. Over 100 student organizations attended the event to recruit new students to their clubs. These student organizations filled the Ballroom, Jayhawk Room, and Big 12 Room on the fifth floor of the Union. On level one of the Union, students enjoyed karaoke, face painting, and caricature artists.

Students played carnival games for prizes in the Union Bookstore on level two. This was also a perfect time to pick up textbooks before classes started. The Market, Impromptu Cafe, and Panda Express on level three handed out free samples so students could get their first taste of KU Dining. Members of KJHK, KU’s student run radio station, gave station tours to students who were interested in joining.

Outside on the Union Plaza, attendees enjoyed great weather and music from local band CS Luxem and Yes You Are from Kansas City. Students took instant print photos in a Volkswagon van converted into a photobooth, The Photobus. Local sponsors handed out freebies to students, drawing lines down the street.

“Unionfest is a vital part of Hawk Week because students are exposed to this side of campus, they become closer to other incoming students, and they are able to dive into all that this campus has to offer,” says Aubrie Wauhob, SUA’s Fine Arts Coordinator.

“I spent this summer planning Unionfest and it was so satisfying to see it play out so successfully. I had so much fun at Unionfest my freshman year, and it made me happy to be able to give that same experience to a new class of students,” says Katie Miller, SUA’s Vice President of Communications and this year’s Unionfest Coordinator.
